Racoon Rally

Saturday, June 24, 2006

Another great race is history. Big Horn Velo was once again on thepodium! This was my third year doing the raccoon rally in Salamenca NYand it is definitely a great race. Five families camped and four of usdid the races. Happy to report no visits from the coons but Steve didsee a mammal bear and her four cubs during a preride of the racecourse! Yikes! The rally offers a 24 or 48 road race. a trials race.downhill race, and a cross country 12 to 29 mile MTB race.I did the cat 5 citizens race. My first road race ever. It was 24miles long with two climbs. The last climb is allot like HoffmanHollow. Long and sustained. I placed 23 out of about 70 riders. Goodcompetition definetly some strong riders in this bunch. The club fromHollySki had at least 25 riders in the 4 classifications. I was happywith my result. I organized a pace line with three riders late in therace doing 15mph and looking demoralized. Got us up to 28mph! On thelong downhill another rider and I swapped leads and chased down a groupof 6 riders who were 1/4 mile ahead of us. That was definetly fun.Felt good at the finish. I think I had the legs to do laps. Next yearI'll try the masters 2 lap race. Maybe I get some Big Horn velo guys toride, show those Hollyski guys who has the better looking Jersey!Steve Burlingame, Larry Luther and Larry's friend Rusty did the crosscountry MTB race. Steve got a third in his sport age group. His bestshowing at this race and great if you remember seeing him last Thursdaysuffering on the Bird creek ride. I heard Larry was about 18th in Sportand Rusty did well in the beginner race also about 18th.. Great job guys! Finally the kids raced on Sunday. My kids raced doing the beginner onelap race. Katie was 8th and Garrett was 15th. Hunter, Steve's daughter, was 7th. Even Cameron Steve's 4 year old raced! Last in thebeginners race but she was the youngest! Tough competeion this year allthe kids had multigear mountain bikes. I joked what's next carbon fiberframes for next year. My kids are only 8 & 6!I attached some pictures to this email not sure if you can see themthrough the listserver. If not drop me an email and I can send you some. What happened to Eric Burns you ask. I think the picture of him eatingice cream says it all.
